Earthquake survivors get solar-powered bibles

Quote:
AS international aid agencies rush food, water and medicine to Haiti's earthquake victims, a US faith-based group is sending Bibles to Haitians in their hour of need.

Not just any Bible.

These are solar-powered audible Bibles that can broadcast the holy scriptures in Haitian Creole to 300 people at a time.

Called the "Proclaimer," the audio Bible delivers "digital quality" and is designed for "poor and illiterate people", the Faith Comes By Hearing group said.

According to their website, the Proclaimer is "self-powered and can play the Bible in the jungle, desert or ... even on the moon!"

The Albuquerque-based organisation said 600 of the devices were already on their way to Haiti.

It said it was responding to the Haitian crisis by "providing faith, hope and love through God's Word in audio".

Start of sidebar. Skip to end of sidebar.

End of sidebar. Return to start of sidebar.

With tens of thousands of Port-au-Prince residents living outdoors because their homes have collapsed or they fear aftershocks from last week's quake, the audio Bible can bring them "hope and comfort that comes from knowing God has not forgotten them through this tragedy", the group said.

Utterly pathetic. This kind of crap is why some people refuse to donate to religious charities--places like this give religious charities a really bad name. They need food and shelter, not high-tech bibles.

Yeah, I kind of agree. Unless the people funding this cause knew entirely, that the outcome was to get the bibles over there. Then it's fine.

It ends up that it is a joint cooperation between "Cooperative Baptist Fellowship" and "Faith Comes By Hearing" that is funding and promoting this.

I don't think its that bad. Millions of dollars are being donated to Haiti by American citizens for food and shelter, and possibly Billions of dollars from various governments. But that doesn't mean other groups can't do other things to help in other ways. I think going high tech is a little gimmicky, (why not just give them physical Bibles-- if Bible's weigh too much to ship in large amounts, how about those little Bibles that include the entire New Testament and a few books from Old Testament?) But I think a lot of people are able to cope with tragedy and misery a lot better with a bit of faith.

I'd rather have food etc, but man does not live by bread alone.

In that situation, people might need moral support.

Are the electronic talking Bibles going to give them that support?

It's so hard for me to see that side of it.... I'm not saying it's invalid, but it's hard for me to see....

I agree with jq on that. As long as the people donating towards that cause knew that it wouldn't bring food, then it's great. No offense meant, but it's more than you did for the people of Haiti, correct? I only say that to illustrate the point that at least they did something to help. It's more than I did. I texted 10 bucks to them. Big whoop. I think it's great that they did something to help.

The other thing is, maybe it's hard for you to see that side, but then again, what does God mean to you? Not much is my guess. Now imagine if you looked at God as your strength, your life, your source? If anyone who got one of those Bibles viewed God in that way, it may have meant MORE to them than food ever could.

Good point. It's just hard for me to TRULY see because I personally don't view religion as my strength, source, or life.

Well, in a perfect world no one would view religion as any of that. Unless you meant God instead of religion. Two polar opposites, usually.

I meant a belief in a higher power.
