I'm about 25% through this book I downloaded this weekend. It was written in 2007 or 2008. It's kind of an alternate present, sort of. It's 2010, a couple years after AIDS was cured and there's a new disease called V-CIDS. Homophobia is now socially acceptable again (overtly promoted, even), and anyone who has the disease (gay or straight or whatever) is branded on the forehead and sent to concentration camps to be exterminated. The main character isn't gay but his son is, and he's in one of these camps. It's totally one of the most messed up books I've read so far.

It's freaking me the hell out. I kinda hate it so far, but I hope "it gets better" lol.

Amazon.com: The Immortals (9780451454027): Tracy Hickman: Books

Amazon's description is pathetic:

In a twenty-first-century America ravaged by disease and stifled by martial law, one man, Michael Barris, a wealthy interactive-television mogul with a controversial past, challenges the system and becomes the sole hope of a desperate world.

This is pretty much like describing A Clockwork Orange as "A violent gang member's attempt to reform himself by listening to classical music". WTF Amazon?

So I finished the book. Amazing piece of work. Ending is certainly not what I expected, but turned out OK I guess.
